      <image:caption>(Fig 1) Manet's Olympia is a great example of what I personally infer from Satre's notion 'existence precedes essence'. There is no objective and publicly available truth to be revealed in this painting, but instead there’s only a path, a kaleidoscope of opportunities, a whispering spur inviting you to your very own subjective experience. While the historic context speaks for itself, the conclusion to be drawn from it remains a vexed issue to this present day, as the work appears unfinished and somewhat incomprehensible. Paraphrasing art critics and inquiries, immediately reacting to the exhibition in Paris (1865), led by renown art critic Théophile Gautier: 'Why is Olympia so ugly? For what purpose is a black maid standing beside her with a bouquet of flowers? No one seems to be pleased about their smell? Why are the flowers wrapped? And why in newspaper? What role does the wretched skinny cat of that beastly black color play?'</image:caption>

Couldn't have phrased it better than Alexander Nehamas in 'Only a Promise of Happiness: The Place of Beauty in a World of Art' 2017.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>(Fig 3) Compared to the garish and forceful descriptive critique in Fig 1, Émile Zola (1867) shares his perspective toward a more aesthetic judgment: "Her look has the sourness of someone prematurely aged, her face the disturbing perfume of a fleur du mal: her body fatigued, corrupted, but painted under a single, transparent light, the shadows light and fine, the bed and pillows put down in a velvet, modulated grey." Arguably, Zola saw a connection between the content and form of the painting, demanding an interpretative explanation.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>(Fig 4) Her looks confronts the spectator directly. A frank stare. There seems to be some blankess and inexpressiveness in her direct outward gaze, don't you think? At the same time, her 'fixed eyes' evoke as Charles Baudelaire would put it: 'a vague and dreamy air'. It's a look that is indefinite as it is direct, as yielding as it is assertive, as arrogant as it is tender. Her gaze acknowledges the spectator as it ignores him. If you look closely, you can see a shadow of a smile emerging on the right side of her mouth. Whether she is smiling in surrender, defiance, resignation or indifference is hard to say. The artwork resists closure. And so do my words.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>It would be surprising to me, if there was no correlation between the semblance and beauty of Vicenza's architecture and the city's inhabitants graceful aging. It seems to me that the Vicentini have lived and have wanted to live-on longer beyond their finitude. And so they built and decorated their homes for centuries, and not just for the passing hour. Endless walks give rise to the discovery of richly detailed façades and history-laden inner courtyards. Enduring spirits they are, surely more difficult to find in our northern climates of earnestness and isolation.</image:caption>

An exploration of the underlying structures. Trying to come to grips with the entire process from farm to slaughter house; a necessary confrontation - I believe - when continuing eating meat. It involves the farmers, their protocols, respective ecosystems, animal welfare from diets, herding, to increasing biodiversity, and building resilience to droughts, sicknesses and plagues.</image:caption>
